Ho, Troyden share gold
Sunday’s Telkom SA National Open Water 10-kilometre swim in Jeffrey’s Bay saw Chad Ho and Troyden Prinsloo share the gold while Natalie Du Toit added yet another national title to her name.
The national swimming championships ended in Newton Park, Port Elizabeth on Saturday and the open water was held at the new venue out of the city.
The expected battle was between Ho and Troyden at the Marina Martinique. Ho took the lead within the first kilometre of the 4 x 2.5km lap course and went head-to-head with Prinsloo. At the finish line both ended just under the 2 hour mark (1hr 57min 18.37sec to be exact) to share the gold medal with Michael Marais taking silver in 2:24:11.79.
Du Toit was in a class of her own as she needed just over two hours (2:02:21.21) to cover the distance. She took the lead on the first lap and showed just why she has multiple world records behind her name in the Paralympics. Du Toit was followed home by Jessica Roux (2:09:30.70) and 2:11:07.38 of Nicole Brits.
The Telkom SA National Open Water Championships is the qualification event for the FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China in July.
Monday will see the conclusion of the Open Water Swim with the 5km race starting at 9am.
