South African cyclists raced to first and second place in the individual time trial at the African Continental Championships in Asmara, Eritrea on Friday morning, writes Mark Etheridge.

Team USN’s Cherise Taylor, winner of this year’s Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay cycle tour, took the honours in the 36-kilometre event with Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio, winner of last week’s MTN OFM Classic road race, in second spot. Taylor rode the out-and-back route in 24min 38sec with Moolman-Pasio 20 seconds adrift.

The South African success at high-altitude Asmara (the race was fought out at 2350-metre altitude) is excellent news as our riders attempt to nail down places on Team South Africa for next year’s Olympic Games in London as they gained 13 more precious points.

A silver medallist at the 2006 Junior World Championships, Taylor celebrated her 22nd birthday earlier this month. Third place went to Mauritius rider Aurelie Halbwachs who was silver medallist in the time trial at this year’s All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozamique, behind South Africa’s Lise Olivier.

The SA men’s cyclists will be in time trial action later on Friday.
