South Africa picked up more honours in the African continental road cycling championships in Asmara, Eritrea on Friday.

After ending second in the men’s team trial on Wednesday, Cherise Taylor and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio took gold and silver in the women’s individual time trial, raced over 36 kilometres on Friday morning.

Then in the men’s individual time trial, also over 36km, Louis Meintjies and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg picked up gold and silver in the Under-23 category.

In the overall results though it was the home town’s Daniel Teklehaymanot who won time trial honours, with Meintjies and Janse van Rensburg getting silver and bronze.

Communication is sketchy in the East African region with no times available for the men’s time trial early on Saturday but team manager Barry Austin said: “The altitude is really a problem and we are testing and trying different ways to adapt.”

Asmara is situated 2400 metres above sea level and indeed, Moolman-Pasio needed a fair amount of time to shake off a lactic acid induced headache after her silver medal on Friday. “Time trialing at this altitude is not easy,” she said.

Saturday is a rest day and Sunday’s final day sees the elite women racing over 62.7km and then the men tackle a 146.3km route to round off the championships.
